Saria and her fairy Since the beginning of the Zelda series, fairies have played a major role in various parts of each game. Generally there have been two types of fairies: the small, healing fairies found all over the place, and the Great Fairies found in caves that not only heal, but supply additional power to Link. Zelda:OoT introduced a new kind of fairy: the companion fairy.

Each Kokiri receives a fairy partner most likely sometime shortly after their birth. This fairy is special: it does not disappear and follows its partner wherever they may go. Although roughly the same size as a health fairy, it's a sentient being and is able to communicate like the Great Fairies can.

These fairies' primary purposes are to protect, assist, and provide companionship for their Kokiri child. By turning different colours they are able to signify certain conditions (such as red for danger, blue for an observation, green for communication, etc.). Although the can't physically fight, they are able to act a guide in times of trouble.

Saria's fairy Saria's fairy has no known name or gender. It glows a faint green, as opposed to Navi's usual blue. Because they've been together for so long, it can be accurately speculated that Saria and her fairy are very close. When Saria reawakens as a Sage, even though she's unable to live the life of a Kokiri anymore, her fairy stays with her, a true comrade.
